*Essence and Originality*: This title is highly concise, directly drawing on the core tenets of “simplifying the complex” and “embracing the unique” from the poem *“To Junmou and His Son”* by Zheng Banqiao, a Qing Dynasty literary figure and philosopher. It makes it immediately clear that the work is not merely a depiction of autumn trees and red leaves, but rather an “artistic manifesto.” It highlights that the painting’s core purpose is to convey a philosophy of creation and aesthetics.
Interpretation of the Painting’s Symbolism:
This work is a prime example of interpreting philosophical concepts through visual form. Through its minimalist composition and classical verse, it constructs a profound allegory about art and life.
First Layer: Formal Practice — “删繁就简三秋树”
The composition itself serves as a visual embodiment of the upper couplet:
Minimalist forms: It captures only the most essential lines of the tree’s branches—stripped of their lush foliage in autumn and winter—accented by a few scattered red leaves. This precisely interprets “stripping away the superfluous to reveal the essence”—that is, removing all excess to capture the subject’s core structure and spirit.
Abundant negative space: The vast expanse of blank space in the background is not emptiness, but the ultimate embodiment of “simplicity.” It provides the subject with breathing room and leaves the viewer with boundless imagination. This is both an artistic technique and a wisdom of life: by leaving room for blank space in life, we can focus on what truly matters.
