This circular miniature, with the “cicada” as its central motif, weaves an Eastern fable about spiritual enlightenment and life’s choices. Its meaning can be interpreted progressively on two levels:

I. The Realm of the Image—An Eternal Snapshot of a Noble Life

With minimalist brushwork, the painting captures the most evocative moment at the turn of summer and autumn:

Ink-Wreathed Branch: Its vigorous, weathered lines symbolize resilience in the face of adversity, providing a sturdy foothold for the cicada perched high above.

Autumn Cicada: Depicted using a technique that blends meticulous and freehand brushwork, its wings—blended with light ink—and its precisely outlined head and thorax convey a vitality that transcends stillness. In Chinese culture, the cicada—which “栖高枝，饮清露，鸣远声”—has long been a symbol of the noble gentleman, embodying purity, loftiness, foresight, and transcendence.

Circular composition: Like a full moon, or a round window offering a glimpse into the spiritual realm, it envelops this solitary and noble stance of life in an atmosphere of perfection, introspection, and eternity.

II: The Spirit of the Inscription—A Manifesto of “Either/Or”

The inscription on the left side of the painting is the key to understanding its essence. It can be accurately identified and interpreted as follows:

“宁作金蝉饮清露，

不为螳螂满腹污。

Through its use of contrast and dichotomous phrasing, this poem delivers a powerful spiritual declaration:

“宁作金蝉饮清露”: It represents an ideal chosen by one’s own volition. “Golden Cicada” is a term of respect that emphasizes its preciousness. “Drinking the clear dew” is the central act—subsisting solely on the purest, most essential nourishment (clear dew)—symbolizing the ultimate pursuit of spiritual purity, noble character, and a simple life.

“不为螳螂满腹污”: It represents a resolute rejection and contrast. Although the mantis is an insect, in this context, the phrase “full of filth” is used as a metaphor for a mind filled with greed, distracting thoughts, or sordid schemes. Choosing not to be a mantis means rejecting spiritual degradation, corruption, and vulgar tastes.
