    I. Explanation of the Title:

    “The Cockscomb That Does Not Crow”:

    “Crowing at dawn”: This refers to the rooster’s duty of announcing the dawn. This phrase precisely captures the association and cultural role of the cockscomb, which is named for its striking resemblance to a rooster’s comb.

    “Silent”: This is the source of the painting’s wit and irony. It highlights that while the flower possesses the form of a rooster’s comb, it lacks the substance of a rooster’s duty to herald the dawn. This captures the humorous essence conveyed in Zhou Shicheng’s original poem: “有时风动头相倚,似向阶前欲斗时。只为著冠能报晓,至今犹自不曾啼”—resembling the form but not the spirit.

    This title directly and humorously reveals the core joke—“it looks like a rooster but isn’t one, and it doesn’t crow”—making it more apt and evocative than any romantic or flowery name.

    The English title can be loosely translated as “那声永不到来的鸡鸣.”

    “Cockcrow”(鸡鸣)is the core action,“Never Comes”(永不到来)It is filled with a sense of humor and philosophy born of dashed expectations, echoing the Chinese name “Wuming” in a similar vein, and is rich in literary quality.

     

    II. Interpretation of the Painting’s Symbolism (Based on Zhou Shicheng’s Poetry)

    This is a “visual poem of humor” brimming with literati wit, whose meaning is both clear and ingenious:

    First Layer: The Fun of Resemblance

    The artist “Runhe” employs superb freehand brushwork to vividly depict the celosia’s plump, layered form—resembling a rooster’s comb—and its blood-red hue, visually establishing the premise that it “resembles a rooster.” This is a tribute to nature’s marvelous mimicry.

     

    Second Layer: The Debate Between Name and Reality (Core Humor)

    The inscription “瑶台歌积绛,只欠一声啼” takes on a whole new meaning in this context. It is no longer a mere description of the celestial platform, but rather a form of exaggerated jest: even though this flower originates from the celestial realm of Yaotai (“Yaotai”) and possesses magnificent colors (“deep crimson”), its most crucial “crowing” sound (“a single crow”) is forever “lacking”—that is, absent.

    This incongruity—possessing all outward splendor yet lacking the most essential function—is precisely the source of the painting’s humor. The helplessness and wit in Zhou Shicheng’s poem—“It wears a crown to herald the dawn, yet to this day has never crowed”—is perfectly visualized by the artist through a silent flower and a tiny insect (rather than a rooster) that has nothing to do with “heralding the dawn.”

    The appearance of the little insect serves as the finishing touch. It suggests that this “fake rooster’s” true interaction with life and connection to nature lies not in competing with its own kind (chickens) through crowing, but in companionship with the real creatures of the grass (the little insect).
